RBC Bearings winds up for wind energy market

RBC Bearings Inc. is winding up for the wind energy market with a $17 million plant that will make a type of bearing used in wind turbines, the
Houston Business Journal reported.
The Houston-area plant will manufacture slewing ring bearings used in wind turbines and other machinery.
“The new demand for the [wind energy] industry would be measured in billions of dollars per year,” vice president Rick Edwards told the newspaper. “That’s a new market for us. It’s a new market for a lot of people.”
Oxford, Conn.-based RBC is the latest bearings maker to enter the wind energy business, but will be one of only about a dozen that make slewing bearings globally, Edwards said.
The Timken Co. recently announced its intention to expand capacity at a Union, S.C., plant for large-bore bearings used in wind turbines, following its joint venture to build main-shaft bearings in Xiangtan, China.
The new RBC plant will also make large-bore bearings, ranging from eight feet to 14 feet in diameter and weighing up to 8,000 pounds.
